Synopsis
On a sweltering summer day during vacation, Nagara and thirty-five of his junior high classmates find their entire middle school building inexplicably drifting through a pitch-black void between dimensions. Alongside this bizarre displacement, the students discover that many of them have manifested bizarre supernatural abilities, from manipulating gravity to fabricating physical objects from thin air. While student council authorities attempt to impose rigid rules, interpersonal tensions, philosophical clashes, and adolescent nihilism tear the student body apart. Guided by the observant Nagara and an eccentric girl named Nozomi, the youths navigate surreal alien dimensions searching for a way home.
⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Madhouse animated this twelve-episode original science-fiction mystery anime, which broadcast in summer 2021. The project was created, directed, and written by visionary auteur Shingo Natsume, celebrated for *One-Punch Man* and *Space Dandy*, with original character designs provided by acclaimed manga artist Hisashi Eguchi. Featuring deliberate minimalism, hand-drawn character acting, and an eclectic alternative indie-rock soundtrack curated by Shinichiro Watanabe, the series gained international critical acclaim. It won the prestigious Excellence Award at the 25th Japan Media Arts Festival, praised as a hauntingly profound coming-of-age existential masterpiece.
