Story

Synopsis

Following traumatic middle school experiences where their obsessive deductive talents caused social friction and alienating misunderstandings, high school freshmen Jougorou Kobato and Yuki Osanai form a mutual pact. Vowing to abandon their dangerous investigative habits, they resolve to become completely ordinary, peaceful citizens (shoushimin). Together, they aim for quiet high school days filled with sweet pastries and harmless study sessions. However, minor mysteries constantly disrupt their tranquil routine: stolen strawberry tarts, cryptic hit-and-run bicycles, and suspicious classroom dilemmas seem to follow them wherever they go. Despite their best efforts to look the other way, the duo's sharp analytical minds inexorably draw them back into the shadows of deduction.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Shoshimin: How to Become Ordinary (Shoushimin Series) adapts the celebrated mystery novel series written by Honobu Yonezawa, renowned creator of Hyouka. Produced by boutique animation studio Lapin Track and directed by Mamoru Kanbe with character designs by Atsushi Saito, the anime premiered in July 2024 on TV Asahi's NUMAnimation block. Celebrated for its cinematic visual composition, atmospheric jazz soundtrack, and delicate character psychology, the first season received widespread critical acclaim and an immediate greenlight for Season 2.
