Story

Synopsis

In a bleak fantasy world locked in a brutal war of extermination against the Demon King's hordes, heroism is not a noble calling: it is the supreme criminal sentence reserved for the realm's most heinous felons. Convicted convicts sentenced to the Hero Penal Unit 9004 are fitted with cursed collars, cast onto the bleeding frontline meat-grinder, and forced to fight until dismembered, only to be resurrected repeatedly by holy alchemy to die again. Former knight and convicted murderer Xylo Forbarts commands the penal legion, fighting with bitter tactical pragmatism until an encounter with a fallen holy goddess alters the calculus of their doomed penal crusade.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Adapted from Rocket Shokai's dark fantasy light novel series illustrated by Mephisto, the anime television adaptation presents a gritty, deconstructive reimagining of hero mythology. Subverting colorful fantasy tropes through visceral battlefield brutality, philosophical cynicism, and political intrigue, the series explores the horrors of state-enforced martyrdom and the raw human will to survive against insurmountable despair.
