SAND LAND · 2023
A fiend prince and a human sheriff brave desert wastelands for water.
Synopsis
Across an unforgiving apocalyptic wasteland where catastrophic wars and environmental neglect have dried up all rivers, greedy royal authorities control the only remaining water supply, charging exorbitant prices to impoverished citizens. Desperate to relieve his dying community, principled human sheriff Rao travels into demon territory to recruit supernatural allies. Benevolent fiend prince Beelzebub and his cunning older attendant Thief agree to join Rao's expedition. Commandeering a military combat tank, the unlikely trio braves ferocious desert sandstorms, monstrous canyon beasts, and corrupt royal armies to discover the mythical Legendary Spring.
Background (may contain spoilers)
Directed by Toshihisa Yokoshima and co-produced by Sunrise, Kamikaze Douga, and Anima, *Sand Land* is a 2023 full three-dimensional computer-animated theatrical film based on the classic short manga created by Akira Toriyama in 2000. Released in Japanese theaters in August 2023 by Toho, the feature faithfully honors Toriyama's distinctive mechanical vehicle aesthetics, endearing demon character designs, and whimsical adventure spirit. The production was commended by longtime fans for its kinetic armored vehicle combat, expressive facial rendering, and heartwarming themes of cross-species cooperation against tyranny.

“This work ``SAND LAND'' not only brings out Akira Toriyama's original charm in terms of story and structure, but also carefully picks out parts that push his ideas more strongly than ever before, and it can be said that it succeeded in creating a strong content that is more meaningful to watch now than the ``Dragon Ball'' series.”
“'Sand Land' is a rewarding series, entertaining throughout most of its duration, which would be much better if the second part was handled better.”
“Nowadays, if you want to recreate the hand-drawn manga original in animation without losing its charm, there may actually be many cases where it would be better to turn to 3DCG...This is the first time in a while since Dorohedoro (2020) that I felt this way, and this was a great work.”
“The newest film from the creator of Dragon Ball is a story that touches on the impacts of war, global warming, and corporate greed.”
