Synopsis
Having successfully guided humanity through centuries of spiritual history, Jesus Christ and Gautama Buddha decide to take a peaceful gap year on Earth. Renting a modest, low-budget apartment in the Tachikawa suburb of western Tokyo, the two religious icons struggle to pass as ordinary modern roommates. Buddha is a thrifty, sensible roommate who constantly clips grocery coupons and monitors Jesus's reckless impulse purchases on designer clothing and comedy blogs. Navigating neighborhood yakuza, public bathhouses, theme park roller coasters, and suspicious landladies, the holy duo discovers that surviving modern Japanese domestic life requires divine patience.
⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
The movie builds through episodic slice of life vignettes where divine miracles constantly threaten to blow their cover. Whenever Jesus feels emotional joy, his crown of thorns blooms with fresh roses and water turns into sparkling wine, while Buddha's forehead glow illuminates dark train stations whenever he achieves inner peace. During a trip to a local public sento, a heavily tattooed yakuza gangster mistakes Jesus for the crown prince of a rival crime family due to his crucifixion scars. The film concludes with the duo enjoying suburban fireworks, agreeing that ordinary earthly friendship is the greatest miracle of all.
