Synopsis

Serving as the right-hand executive to sadistic billionaire finance tycoon Kazutaka Hyoudou, middle manager Yukio Tonegawa bears the excruciating burden of executive corporate survival. When Chairman Hyoudou grows bored of ordinary luxuries, he orders Tonegawa to construct an unprecedented, deadly underground death match tournament for indebted degenerates. Caught between the mercurial whims of his megalomaniacal employer and a squad of interchangeable, black-suited subordinates who cannot even agree on conference room nametags, Tonegawa navigates high-stakes corporate bureaucracy. His daily battles involve presentation slide revisions, awkward team bowling outings, and catastrophic workplace stress.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Adapted from the hit satirical spin-off manga written by Tensei Hagiwara and illustrated by Tomohiro Hashimoto, *Mr. Tonegawa: Middle Management Blues* was animated by studio Madhouse, broadcasting for twenty-four episodes in 2018. Directed by Keiichiro Kawaguchi with dramatic narration by Jay Kabira, the anime cleverly reimagines the sinister universe of Nobuyuki Fukumoto's high-stakes gambling classic *Kaiji* as an uproarious workplace comedy. The production resonated with office workers for its painfully relatable satire of corporate hierarchy, presentation panic, and middle management anxiety.
