Metropolis
Metropolis · 2001
A detective and an android search for human warmth.
Synopsis
Directed by Rintaro and written by Katsuhiro Otomo, this dazzling dieselpunk adaptation of Osamu Tezuka's manga is set in the colossal multi-tiered industrial city of Metropolis. Japanese private detective Shunsaku Ban and his young nephew Kenichi arrive in the city to track down rogue scientist Dr. Laughton, who is secretly hired by the totalitarian plutocrat Duke Red to build Tima, a supreme gynoid android resembling Red's deceased daughter. When Duke Red's fanatical anti-robot adopted son Rock burns the laboratory to destroy Tima, Kenichi rescues the amnesiac gynoid girl, fleeing into the impoverished subterranean slums.

Brilliant, artistic, political and deep. Sadly it should have been aimed more squarely at one audience.
Read full reviewFar from being a complete film it's nods to a host of films, from Dr. Zhivago to Blade Runner
