Story

Synopsis

In the whimsical fantasy kingdom of Jam Jam, the villainous demon king Giri awakens after three centuries of sealment. Seeking a legendary hero to defeat the dark lord, the king issues a grand summons. Energetic country boy Nike is pushed out the door by his hero-obsessed parents, teaming up with Kukuri, the sweet last surviving practitioner of the ancient magical circle art known as Guru Guru. Armed with absurd quest items and accompanied by an intrusive pixelated video-game narrator, the quirky duo sets off to conquer wacky dungeons and defeat goofy demonic henchmen.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Production I.G animated this vibrant twenty-four-episode comedy series, which aired during the summer and fall 2017 seasons. Directed by Hiroshi Ikehata and written by Hisaaki Okui, the series served as the third anime adaptation of Hiroyuki Eto's beloved 1990s manga, celebrating the franchise's twenty-fifth anniversary. Departing from previous partial adaptations, this 2017 reboot adapted the manga's entire storyline from beginning to end with breakneck comedic pacing. The anime won widespread acclaim for its charming retro video-game HUD graphics, nostalgic 16-bit sound effects, and exuberant, beautifully timed slapstick animation.
