Synopsis

Yuta and Rikka's relationship has settled into something comfortable when Satone Shichimiya returns with an intensity that unsettles the balance, and a family situation threatens to move Rikka away entirely. What follows is a cross-country trip undertaken on delusional pretenses, with Yuta chasing after a girl whose elaborate fantasies have always been a way of managing grief she cannot articulate directly. The film maintains the franchise's comedy while giving its central relationship a genuine test and a proper resolution. Every delusion Rikka maintains turns out to be doing genuine emotional work for her.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Produced by Kyoto Animation and adapted from Torako's light novels, Take On Me concludes the Love, Chunibyo and Other Delusions anime. The franchise built its appeal on treating chuunibyou fantasy as a coping mechanism for real loss rather than purely as a joke, which gave its comedy an unusual undercurrent. Kyoto Animation's characteristic attention to small physical performance is on full display, and the film gave the series a definitive ending after years of ambiguity in the television seasons. Its conclusion gave a long-running franchise a resolution its television seasons kept deferring.
