Synopsis

This theatrical compilation reframes the first season of Kyoto Animation's beloved romantic comedy through the eccentric perspective of Rikka Takanashi, a high school girl immersed in teenage eighth-grader syndrome. Armed with her eye patch and imaginary Wicked Eye powers, Rikka details how she first encountered former chuunibyou sufferer Yuuta Togashi and forged a mystical contract with him. While the movie features exaggerated, visually stunning fantasy battles representing Rikka's colorful inner world, it steadily peels back her flamboyant magical persona to examine the deep emotional grief that inspired her elaborate delusions in the first place.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
The movie highlights the emotional climax where Rikka's older sister Tooka forces Rikka to visit her deceased father's demolished home, forcing her to confront the reality of his death. Rikka briefly discards her eye patch and chuunibyou habits, falling into profound sadness. Recognizing that her delusions were a vital psychological coping mechanism, Yuuta rides a bicycle through the night to rescue her, recreating her imaginary Ethereal Horizon. Rikka happily re-dons her eye patch, realizing she can cherish her father's memory while loving Yuuta unconditionally, setting up their continued romance.
