Story

Synopsis

Four-year-old Kotaro Sato moves into the dilapidated Shimizu Apartment building all by himself, carrying a toy sword and formal archaic speech mannerisms picked up from his favorite feudal samurai cartoon. Kotaro's arrival alarms his next-door neighbor, Shin Karino, an impoverished and unsuccessful manga artist who spends his days lounging in pajamas. Realizing that the pint-sized boy is living entirely without parental supervision, Karino and his quirky apartment neighbors step in to accompany Kotaro to the bathhouse, supermarket, and kindergarten. Beneath Kotaro's remarkable independence lies a heartbreaking history of parental domestic neglect and resilient endurance.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
LIDENFILMS animated this poignant ten-episode original net animation series, released globally on Netflix in March 2022. Directed by Tomoe Makino and written by Hiroshi Sato, the anime adapts Mami Tsumura's award-winning manga serialized in *Big Comic Superior*. The production won international critical acclaim for its gentle, empathetic handling of severe real-world social issues, including child neglect, domestic abuse, and childhood trauma. Balancing dry situational comedy with profoundly tear-jerking emotional moments, the anime delivered an unforgettable, bittersweet celebration of chosen family, community solidarity, and the fragile vulnerability of neglected children.
