Story

Synopsis

Deep within Japari Park, an enormous island wildlife sanctuary, a mysterious cosmic substance known as Sandstar transforms wild creatures into anthropomorphic animal girls known as Friends. An amnesiac human child awakens in the savannah region with zero memories of her identity or origin. Dubbed Kaban by a cheerful Serval cat girl, the duo embarks on an expansive expedition across diverse biomes, ranging from snowy mountains to arid deserts, searching for clues about Kaban's species. Along the way, they assist various animal friends, repair vintage park machinery, and outsmart mysterious blob monsters known as Ceruleans.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Studio Yaoyorozu produced this sleeper hit twelve-episode 3D CGI anime series, which aired in early 2017 under the direction of Tatsuki. Conceived originally as part of a multimedia project alongside a mobile game that had shut down prior to broadcast, the low-budget production initially faced low expectations. However, Tatsuki's thoughtful post-apocalyptic world-building, clever zoological insights, and wholesome storytelling triggered an unprecedented viral pop-culture explosion across Japan. The series dominated social media trends, drove monumental zoo attendance nationwide, and stands as one of anime history's greatest surprise commercial triumphs.
