Every twelve years, a desolate metropolis becomes the stage for the clandestine Zodiac Tournament, where twelve lethal mercenary champions embody the animals of the Chinese zodiac in a battle royale. Ingesting poisonous gems called Beast Gems that will kill them within twelve hours, each warrior must slay their eleven competitors and collect all gems to receive an antidote and any single wish granted. Through psychological mind games, deadly weapon proficiencies, and ruthless tactical assassinations, each competitor fights desperately, revealing tragic backstories before dying in merciless combat encounters.

Based on the light novel written by Nisio Isin and illustrated by Hikaru Nakamura, *Juni Taisen: Zodiac War* was adapted into a twelve-episode anime series by studio Graphinica in autumn 2017. Directed by Naoto Hosoda with scripts by Sadayuki Murai, the production earned enthusiastic interest for its subversion of traditional battle tournament tropes, utilizing reverse chronological flashbacks to explore character psychology right before their abrupt demises. Its fluid 3D digital camera integration and brutal combat set pieces provide gripping, suspenseful dark fantasy entertainment.
