Synopsis

When catastrophic mega-earthquakes suddenly tear across the Japanese archipelago, soaring skyscrapers collapse and devastating tsunamis submerge coastal regions. Fourteen-year-old track athlete Ayumu Mutoh and her younger brother Gou must unite with their parents, international neighbor kite pilot Kite, and fellow survivors to navigate the collapsing nation. Facing treacherous volcanic ash, fracturing highway systems, and panic-stricken crowds, the family journeys toward hypothetical rescue ships. Through immense personal loss and harrowing natural perils, the resilient group clings to optimism, mutual love, and enduring hope as their homeland sinks into the ocean.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Directed by prominent animation filmmaker Masaaki Yuasa at Science SARU, *Japan Sinks: 2020* adapts Sakyo Komatsu's classic 1973 disaster sci-fi novel into a contemporary ten-episode streaming series released on Netflix in July 2020. With music composed by Kensuke Ushio, the production updates the original Cold War narrative to examine modern Japanese multiculturalism, digital connectivity, and familial resilience under catastrophic duress. Its raw depictions of unexpected mortality and emotional catharsis generated widespread discourse, cementing the series as a uniquely provocative disaster drama.
