Story

Synopsis

As human belief in ancient Taoist religion dwindles in the modern digital age, the revered deities of the Heavenly Realm face a dire existential crisis: severe budget cutbacks and catastrophic unemployment. To survive in contemporary society, the immortals descend to the mortal realm, attempting to blend into modern urban lifestyles. From the Jade Emperor managing corporate payroll and Erlang Shen working as a stressed-out private investigator, to Nezha attending modern elementary school, the ancient immortals struggle comically with smartphones, rental contracts, and office politics, proving that modern bureaucracy is far more terrifying than mythological demons.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Created as an original satirical comedy donghua adapting popular Chinese web comics, *You Shen Me* was produced for online streaming in 2013. Spanning dozens of short-form comedic episodes, the series delighted viewers with its sharp fourth-wall breaking parodies of traditional Chinese mythology and classical folklore deities. Praised for its rapid comedic timing, clever cultural allegories, and affectionate satire of contemporary white-collar struggles, the show became an early online cult comedy hit among young Chinese internet communities.
