Synopsis

Hotaru gets lost in a forest as a child and is helped by Gin, a boy wearing a mask who explains that he will disappear entirely if any human touches him. She returns every summer for years, and the two build a friendship constrained by a rule neither of them can break, growing older while Gin does not. The story is short, quiet, and entirely committed to the ache of a relationship with an obvious ending that both parties choose to have anyway. Nothing about the ending is surprising, which somehow makes it considerably worse.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Adapted from Yuki Midorikawa's short manga by Brain's Base, this film comes from the creator of Natsume's Book of Friends and shares that series' gentle approach to human and spirit relationships, condensed into roughly forty-five minutes. Its brevity is central to its effect, allowing no room for subplots or distraction from the central premise. The film earned strong critical reception and remains one of the most frequently recommended short anime films, particularly for viewers who want something emotionally devastating delivered efficiently rather than across a full season.
