Story

Synopsis

In a rural village in Guangdong, scrawny, bullied teenager Juan lives an impoverished life with his grandfather while his parents work grueling construction jobs in Guangzhou. Inspired by a charismatic female lion dancer who gifts him her lion head costume, Juan resolves to master the traditional art of southern Chinese lion dancing. Teaming up with his eccentric, chubby friend Kat and skinny friend Monkey, Juan convinces former lion dancing champion turned salted-fish vendor Qiang to train them. Despite community ridicule and physical exhaustion, the three misfits train relentlessly to compete in the prestigious Guangzhou National Championship.

When Juan's father falls into a vegetative coma from a construction accident, Juan moves to Guangzhou to work three manual labor jobs to pay hospital bills, shelving his dream. On the morning of the championship, Kat and Monkey qualify for the finals, but their lion head breaks. Hearing the war drums from a rooftop, Juan sprints across the city to join them. During the final routine, Juan attempts the legendary Sky Column leap. While he falls into the water, he hurls the lion head atop the highest pillar, earning the championship and the roaring respect of all rival troupes.
