Synopsis

Yukino Miyazawa is the quintessential high school student, revered for her impeccable grades, athletic prowess, and modest elegance. In truth, she is a vain praise-junkie who studies obsessively at home solely to bask in public admiration. Her social supremacy is shattered by Soichiro Arima, a handsome, genuinely gifted classmate who effortlessly tops test scores. Vowing revenge, Yukino outscores him, only for Arima to discover her unglamorous domestic secret. Rather than exposing her, Arima reveals that he too wears a calculated mask to escape past family trauma, sparking a raw, honest emotional journey between them.

Directed by Hideaki Anno and produced by Gainax in collaboration with J.C.Staff, *Kareshi Kanojo no Jijou* adapts the popular shojo manga created by Masami Tsuda. Airing on TV Tokyo from October 1998 to March 1999 for 26 episodes, the series was celebrated for Anno's avant-garde directorial flair, which incorporated live-action footage, manga panel cutouts, cardboard cutouts, and kinetic typographic title cards. Shiro Sagisu composed the memorable, lighthearted piano and jazz-infused soundtrack. The anime stands as a pioneering romantic deconstruction of teenage vanity, emotional repression, and romantic vulnerability in modern television animation.
