Story

Synopsis

Sweet, timid freshman Yuno achieves her lifelong artistic dream by gaining admission into the prestigious Yamabuki Arts High School. Because the campus is located far from her home, Yuno moves into the sunny, charming Hidamari Apartments directly across the street from the school gates. There, she quickly bonds with an eccentric circle of fellow art students: energetic roommate Miyako, sensible senior cook Hiro, and athletic tomboy Sae. Through daily art class assignments, cooking experiments, and comforting nightly bath conversations, Yuno finds creative inspiration and heartfelt companionship in her new home.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Adapted from Ume Aoki's beloved four-panel slice-of-life manga, *Hidamari Sketch* was animated by studio Shaft and directed by visionary auteur Akiyuki Shinbo, broadcasting in winter 2007. Spanning twelve television episodes, the anime was celebrated for Shinbo's avant-garde visual style, featuring pop-art collages, non-linear chronological storytelling, and charming real-photo backgrounds. The series was hailed as a defining masterpiece of the relaxing iyashikei subgenre, launching a massively popular multi-season anime franchise and establishing Shaft's signature artistic reputation.
