Story

Synopsis

Set thousands of years ago in ancient Mediterranean antiquity, young Hermes is chosen by sacred heavenly prophecy to become a champion of divine truth. As he grows into a brave philosopher warrior, Hermes journeys across mythical lands to unite rival Greek city-states against tyrannical oppressors. He falls in love with the virtuous princess Aphrodite and must confront the bloodthirsty King Minos of Crete, who commands monstrous demonic forces and oppressive naval legions. Guided by heavenly wisdom and spiritual courage, Hermes leads his loyal allies into epic battles to restore justice and peace.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Animation Staff Room and Arts Pro produced this ambitious feature-length animated film, which premiered theatrically across Japan in April 1997. Conceived and supervised by Ryuho Okawa, the founder of the controversial religious movement Happy Science, the film served as the organization's inaugural major theatrical anime production. Directed by Tetsuo Imazawa and scored by composer Yuichi Mizusawa, the movie featured grandiose orchestral themes alongside classical Greek architectural settings. Despite criticism regarding its overtly didactic religious messaging, the film achieved strong domestic box office returns through dedicated organization ticket-drive campaigns.
