Story

Synopsis

Benio Hanamura, nicknamed Haikara-san, is a tomboy in Taisho-era Tokyo who refuses to accept that women should keep house for their husbands instead of chasing their own dreams. The one man who backs her independence, army Lieutenant Shinobu Ijuin, goes missing in action. When he turns up again in Japan, he has no memory of who he is. Benio has to reach him before she is married off to someone else.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Haikara-san: Here Comes Miss Modern Part 2 (Haikara-san ga Tooru Kouhen: Hana no Tokyo Dai Roman) is the second of two films from Nippon Animation based on Waki Yamato's manga Haikara-san ga Tooru, set in Tokyo during the Taisho era (1912 to 1926). Part one opened in November 2017 and was directed by Kazuhiro Furuhashi, who is also credited with the screenplay here. Toshiaki Kidokoro directed part two, replacing the previously announced Mitsuko Kase. Michiru Oshima composed the music. Saori Hayami voices Benio and sings the ending theme, Atarashii Ashita, and Mamoru Miyano voices Shinobu. Part two opened in Japan in October 2018, and Eleven Arts screened it in US theaters that December.
