Synopsis
Set in Tokyo during the democratic Taisho era of the 1920s, seventeen-year-old Benio Hanamura is a fiercely independent tomboy who rejects traditional submissive female domestic roles. Benio practices kendo, drinks sake, and embraces Western haikara fashion, dreaming of marrying for love. Her life is upended when her military father reveals that before her birth, her grandparents arranged her future marriage to handsome Imperial Army lieutenant Shinobu Ijuin. Forced to move into the aristocratic Ijuin estate to undergo bridal etiquette training, Benio clashes with the household, determined to sabotage the betrothal.
⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Despite her comical attempts to behave disgracefully, Benio is disarmed by Shinobu's gentle patience, progressive values, and genuine respect for her independence. As Benio gradually falls deeply in love with him, the Russo-Japanese border tensions escalate, and Shinobu is deployed to the perilous Siberian intervention. At the train station, Shinobu gives Benio his grandmother's cherished hairpin, and they share an emotional farewell. Soon after, devastating telegram news arrives reporting Shinobu missing and presumed dead in Siberia, leaving a grief-stricken Benio resolved to protect the Ijuin family in his absence.
