Story

Synopsis

Following the mysterious murder of his father, a dedicated researcher investigating archaeological anomalies, thirteen-year-old Yuu Tagami travels to New Austral Island to continue the excavation. The uncharted territory is fiercely contested by international criminal cartels and the covert armed forces of the GAIL corporation, both seeking a rumored extraterrestrial energy source. When Yuu is targeted by ruthless mercenaries, he is rescued by Gorg, an enormous, sentient turquoise automaton slumbering within ancient caverns. Forging a telepathic bond with the gentle titan, Yuu uncovers prehistoric alien origins.

Broadcast for twenty-six episodes on TV Tokyo from April to September 1984, *Giant Gorg* was produced by Sunrise and written and directed by celebrated anime creator Yoshikazu Yasuhiko. Known for its realistic military atmosphere, rich ecological aesthetics, and deeply expressive hand-drawn character animation, the series marked a personal passion project for Yasuhiko. Composed by Ken Yajima with a sweeping orchestral score, the adventure anime captured the imaginative spirit of classic adventure literature and remains a respected classic among retro mecha fans.

Allen Moody 1984

Me again; I've put Grampa to bed. To sum it up, this show has an ambitious and well-crafted plot, lots of combat action (if that's your thing), and the artwork, while much less polished than typical today, is at least passable. (Remember, it was all hand-drawn in those days.
