Synopsis
In the year 2065, Earth lies devastated by invasive extraterrestrial organisms called Phantoms, whose lethal touch extracts human souls upon contact. While remaining populations huddle inside shielded barrier cities, brilliant scientist Doctor Aki Ross and her mentor Doctor Sid pursue a holistic ecological solution. Positing that the living planet possesses a collective conscious spirit known as Gaia, Aki embarks on perilous expeditions alongside Captain Gray Edwards and the Deep Eyes military squadron to collect eight complementary biological spirit signatures. Opposing militant factions seeking orbital cannon annihilation, Aki risks her life to synthesize planetary salvation.
⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Directed by franchise creator Hironobu Sakaguchi and produced by Square Pictures, this 2001 sci-fi milestone made cinematic history as the world first photorealistic computer-animated feature film. Boasting cutting-edge hair and facial motion capture technology powered by a dedicated Honolulu supercomputing rendering farm, the film cost over 137 million dollars. While its commercial box-office disappointment led to the closure of Square Pictures, the film earned widespread technical accolades and remains a historic technological breakthrough in the evolution of photorealistic CGI cinema.
