Story

Synopsis

While visiting Washington D.C. on a college graduation trip, Japanese student Saki Morimi is saved from police questioning by Akira Takizawa, a bizarre young man standing completely naked outside the White House. Suffering from total amnesia, Akira holds only a firearm and an advanced cellular phone loaded with 8.2 billion yen in digital currency. Returning to Japan, Akira learns he is one of twelve individuals, known as Selecao, chosen by the enigmatic Mr. Outside. Tasked with using their fortunes to save a stagnant Japanese society, the Selecao must outwit and eliminate each other to avoid execution.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Production I.G animated this original eleven-episode science-fiction political thriller, which broadcast on Fuji TV's Noitamina block in spring 2009. The series was created, directed, and written by visionary auteur Kenji Kamiyama, acclaimed for *Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex*, with original character designs by *Honey and Clover* manga creator Chika Umino. The production won the prestigious Television Award at the 2009 Animation Kobe. Praised for its sharp sociopolitical commentary on youth disillusionment in modern Japan, the series concluded its narrative through two subsequent theatrical feature films.
