Synopsis

Hikaru Kusakabe plays in a band and coasts through school, while Rihito Sajo is the model honor student everyone expects to succeed. When Hikaru notices Sajo mouthing along silently during choir practice, he offers to teach him to sing, and the lessons turn into something neither of them expected or knows how to name. The film treats their relationship with unusual gentleness and realism, focusing on hesitation, small physical gestures, and the specific vulnerability of a first love neither boy has language for yet. Their pace is slow, awkward, and entirely believable for two boys figuring this out.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Adapted from Asumiko Nakamura's manga, Doukyusei is widely regarded as one of the finest boys' love films ever animated, praised for its distinctive sketch-like art style that preserves the loose linework of the original manga rather than cleaning it up. Its restrained, genuinely tender approach to first love set it apart from a genre often criticized for melodrama and problematic dynamics. The film is frequently recommended as an ideal entry point for viewers unfamiliar with boys' love, and it earned strong critical reception well beyond the genre's usual audience.
