Story
Synopsis
In the seaside city of Sanjo, a hub famous for traditional metalworking and carpentry, clumsy high schooler Serufu Yua lives in a rapidly modernizing world driven by automated high-tech gadgets. Wandering past an old wooden shed on campus, she encounters the DIY Club, a creative sanctuary on the brink of closure due to dwindling membership. Alongside her pragmatic childhood friend Purin and a colorful group of classmates, Serufu picks up hammers, saws, and paintbrushes. Learning carpentry from scratch, the girls design treehouses, benches, and cozy furniture, discovering the tactile fulfillment of creating something lasting with their own hands.
⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Studio PINE JAM produced this original twelve-episode slice-of-life anime, which aired during the fall 2022 season. Directed by Kazuhiro Yoneda and written by Kazuyuki Fudeyasu, the show featured exceptionally loose, expressive character animation supervised by Yuusuke Matsuo. Set in Sanjo City in Niigata Prefecture, the production actively collaborated with regional hardware manufacturers to ensure accurate depictions of traditional carpentry tools and woodworking techniques. The anime received widespread praise for its tactile sound design, soft pencil-line art style, and warm philosophical contrast between mechanized automation and the handmade spirit of human craftsmanship.
