Story

Synopsis

Fourteen-year-old Naoko Watanabe considers herself an ordinary junior high school student trying to survive daily classes, quirky family dinners, and eccentric townspeople. However, beneath her quiet demeanor lies an explosive supernatural quirk: whenever her emotional stress or anger boils over, she transforms into Gauko, a giant fire-breathing green dinosaur. Rather than hiding away, Naoko uses her prehistoric alter-ego to blow off steam, incinerate bullies, and resolve absurd neighborhood crises. Alongside supportive classmates and bemused teachers, she navigates the universal challenges of adolescence with sharp humor and atomic fiery breath.

Created and directed by Akira Shigino, *Dino Girl Gauko* was animated by studio Ascension and distributed worldwide on Netflix on November 22, 2019. Featuring twenty bite-sized episodes, the production adopted a colorful, retro cartoon aesthetic reminiscent of vintage Showa era comedy anime. The series earned critical appreciation at international animation festivals, including an official selection at the Annecy International Animated Film Festival, leading to a second season release in 2020.
