Story

Synopsis

Two men arrive at a bar with no memory of how they got there, greeted by a white-haired bartender who informs them they will play a game with their lives on the line and cannot leave until it concludes. As the billiards match proceeds, the pressure strips away composure and reveals what each man actually is, which turns out to be the entire purpose of the exercise. The short delivers a complete story about judgment, memory, and self-deception in a compact runtime. Every shot taken reveals a little more about who these two men actually are.

Directed by Yuzuru Tachikawa and produced by Madhouse as part of the Young Animator Training Project, Death Billiards was a standalone short that proved successful enough to spawn the full television series Death Parade. Its premise, using games to expose character under extreme duress, became the foundation of that expanded work. The Anime Mirai program was designed to develop young animation talent, and this short remains one of its most successful and widely recognized outcomes. Its success directly enabled a full series that expanded the concept considerably further.
