Story

Synopsis

In a bleak dystopian future where Earth surface is desolate and humanity shelters within moving dome cities called Plantations, artificial children known as Parasites are bred exclusively to pilot colossal mechanical weapons named Franxx. Deprived of names, personal freedom, and reproductive knowledge, the children risk their lives fighting monstrous subterranean biomechanical beasts called Klaxosaurs. Former child prodigy Hiro falls into deep despair after failing his pilot synchronization test, until he encounters Zero Two, an elite hybrid pilot with devilish horns and an infamous reputation as the Partner Killer. Uniting together, they ignite destiny.

Produced as an ambitious joint television collaboration between Trigger, A-1 Pictures, and CloverWorks, *DARLING in the FRANXX* aired for twenty-four episodes in 2018 under the direction of Atsushi Nishigori. Written by Nishigori and Naotaka Hayashi with character designs by Masayoshi Tanaka and mechanical styling by Shigeto Koyama, the original anime garnered massive international discussion. Blending classic coming of age puberty metaphors with high-octane mecha action, the production achieved significant cultural impact through its iconic female lead and emotional exploration of human identity.
