Synopsis
Arriving at the train station of the afterlife, a sinful soul is informed by an eccentric celestial guide named Purapura that he has won a cosmic lottery for reincarnation. The soul is placed into the physical body of Makoto Kobayashi, a depressed fourteen-year-old middle school student who recently died by suicide via drug overdose. Given a six-month probationary period to recall the mortal sins of his previous life, the soul must navigate Makoto's dysfunctional household, his mother's secret extramarital affair, cruel school bullying, and Makoto's unrequited romantic obsession with an older classmate.
⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
The reincarnated soul discovers that Makoto took his life because he witnessed his mother entering a love hotel with her dance instructor and discovered his crush was engaged in compensated dating. As the soul learns to paint and forms a genuine friendship with an odd classmate named Saotome, he realizes that human life is not monochromatic, but a messy blend of bright and dark colors. In a climactic revelation, Purapura confirms that the sinful soul is actually Makoto Kobayashi himself. Having forgiven his flawed family and accepted his own imperfections, Makoto gratefully chooses to continue living.
