Story

Synopsis

Serving as the definitive cinematic origin story of Leiji Matsumoto's legendary space pirate, this film depicts the fall of Earth to the totalitarian Illumidas Empire. Former Earth federal space navy commander Captain Phantom F. Harlock returns to an occupied, despondent Earth, refusing to collaborate with the alien conquerors despite pressure from human turncoats. Meeting the visionary engineer Tochiro Oyama and underground radio resistance broadcaster Emeraldas, Harlock resolves to strike back. Together, they construct the legendary armored battleship Arcadia in a secret subterranean shipyard beneath the scorched planet to ignite a revolution.

The Illumidas commander executes human dissidents and kidnaps Harlock's beloved Maya, whose inspiring radio broadcasts maintain the populace's will to resist. Maya is fatally shot during an ambush, passing away in Harlock's arms on the ruined streets. Devastated but unwavering, Harlock dons his iconic black skull eye patch and boards the newly launched Arcadia alongside Tochiro and Emeraldas. Annihilating the Illumidas orbital fleet in a majestic space battle, Harlock raises the skull and crossbones flag, departing Earth as a noble space pirate to fight for freedom among the stars.
