Story

Synopsis

Following the ruinous collapse of the imperial kingdom Jushin, tyrannical feudal lords exploit defenseless villagers across lawless wasteland provinces. Munsu, a cynical former military general turned wandering undercover magistrate, traverses desolate frontiers armed with pistols and a legendary bronze seal. After crossing paths with an idealistic explorer fatally ambushed by cannibal goblins, Munsu vows to locate the dying youth captive sweetheart Chunhyan. Unsheathing ancient phantom military battalions summoned from the spirit realm, the relentless magistrate enforces brutal retribution upon oppressive warlords and liberates desperate commoners.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Co-produced as an anime collaboration between Japan and South Korea, this 2004 dark fantasy feature was animated by OLM under the direction of Jouji Shimura. The screenplay adapts the gritty manhwa written by Youn In-wan and illustrated by Yang Kyung-il, serialised in Shogakukan Sunday Gene-X magazine. Merging traditional Korean folklore, martial arts, and steampunk warfare, the feature covers the opening chapters of the sprawling comic narrative. Munsu relentless anti-hero quest earned critical praise for atmospheric visual design and uncompromised mature themes.
