Synopsis
High school student Kei Nagai focuses exclusively on his academic studies to become a respected doctor, maintaining an emotionally detached outlook on life. His mundane existence is shattered when a speeding truck hits and kills him in front of his classmates, only for Kei to instantly regenerate and revive unharmed. Identified as an Ajin, a rare immortal being hunted by governments for inhumane scientific experimentation, Kei becomes the target of a nationwide police manhunt and greedy civilian bounty hunters, forcing him to flee into the wilderness with his estranged childhood friend Kaito.
⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
While evading capture on Kaito's motorcycle, Kei discovers he can summon an Invisible Black Matter shadow wraith to fight attackers. However, government operative Tosaki tracks Kei to an abandoned hospital, where scientists subject him to agonizing repeated executions and vivisections to harvest organs. The charismatic terrorist Ajin known as Sato, the Hat Man, violently breaches the laboratory to rescue Kei. When Sato sadistically tortures human doctors, Kei turns against Sato to protect the staff, triggering an intense rivalry between the two immortal factions that threatens to plunge Japan into warfare.
