Synopsis

Centuries ago in feudal Japan, Princess Kanna, the last descendant of a sacred winged race, fell in love with a noble warrior named Ryuuya, only to be cursed by sorcerers to endure eternal loneliness sealed in the sky. In the modern era, wandering puppeteer Yukito Kunisaki arrives in a tranquil seaside town, upholding his late mother's vow to find the reincarnated winged maiden. There he meets Misuzu Kamio, an eccentric, frail schoolgirl who experiences vivid dreams of flight. As their bond deepens, Yukito uncovers Misuzu's tragic spiritual heritage, sacrificing everything to break a thousand-year curse.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Directed by veteran animator Osamu Dezaki and produced by Toei Animation, *Air: The Motion Picture* premiered in Japanese theaters in February 2005. Adapting Key's legendary romance visual novel, the theatrical film offered an artistic alternative to Kyoto Animation's contemporaneous television series, infusing the bittersweet melodrama with Dezaki's signature postcard memory freeze-frames and theatrical visual flourishes. Praised for its melancholic coastal atmosphere, intricate seasonal symbolism, and emotionally charged score composed by Shinji Orito, the film provided a poignantly condensed cinematic interpretation of one of visual novel history's most celebrated tragedies.
