Tenchi Muyo Watch Order: Every OVA Season, Movie, and Spin-off Explained, in order
“The original Ryo-Ohki OVA saga plus its TV retellings, magical-girl spin-off, and GXP side story, sorted so the branches make sense.”
Tenchi Muyo split into several parallel branches early on, so this list needs a bit of a map before it makes sense.
The core story is the OVA saga: the original 1992 episodes, a second season, and two theatrical movies, all essential and all one continuous story. Alongside it, the studio also made Tenchi Universe and Tenchi in Tokyo, two separate TV retellings that reimagine the same setup with different plots and endings. Neither is required if you've already watched the OVAs, they're alternate versions rather than sequels, so they're tagged optional.
Magical Girl Pretty Sammy and its sequel Magical Project S are a spin-off built around Sasami's magical-girl alter ego, played mostly for comedy and only loosely tied to the main plot, tagged optional. Tenchi Muyo! GXP follows an entirely different lead character, Seina, on a separate space-academy adventure and barely crosses over with the core cast. It's here because it shares the universe, but it's optional too.
The story proper resumes with the third OVA season in 2003, continues through Ai Tenchi Muyou's short-form 2014 comedy shorts (with its own set of even shorter recap episodes), and carries on through the fourth and fifth OVA seasons, the most recent chapters of the main saga. GXP got its own follow-up OVA in 2023, revisiting Seina's story two decades later.
