Steins;Gate Watch Order: The Best Order for S;G, Steins;Gate 0, and the Movie, in order
“The original series, Episode 23β, Steins;Gate 0, and the movie in the definitive order.”
Steins;Gate has one of the fiercest debates in all of anime fandom: do you watch it in release order, or do you attempt the infamous "chronological" worldline order?
Let's settle it right away: watch the original release order first.
Some fans will tell you to pause the original 2011 series after Episode 22, watch the alternate Episode 23β, endure all 23 episodes of the grim Beta worldline in Steins;Gate 0, and then circle back to finish Episodes 23 and 24 of Season 1. Please do not do this to yourself on a first watch. Steins;Gate builds up an immaculate, heart-pounding momentum in its final stretch. Stopping two episodes before the climax to watch twenty-four episodes of depression is like pausing a rollercoaster right before the loop to go do your taxes.
Start with the original 24-episode Steins;Gate series from start to finish. Let the ending hit you the way the creators intended. After that, treat yourself to the Episode 25 OVA (Egoistic Poriomania) and the Load Region of Déjà Vu film for a well-earned victory lap with Kurisu and the lab members.
Once you're ready to see how that miracle ending was actually paid for, watch Episode 23β (Open the Missing Link) and step into Steins;Gate 0. Steins;Gate 0 isn't a sequel—it's the story of the broken Okabe who lived through the nightmare so the original Okabe could reach the Steins Gate worldline.
At the end: original series, the epilogue film, then 23β and Steins;Gate 0. El Psy Kongroo.
The Original Worldline
Start here. Watch all 24 episodes to the conclusion before touching Steins;Gate 0.
Do not pause at episode 22 to jump to 0 on your first watch. The original series was written as a complete emotional arc; let the ending land before exploring the alternate timeline.
Direct epilogue following episode 24. Lighthearted road trip to Los Angeles.
Often labeled episode 25. It is a satisfying romantic epilogue between Okabe and Kurisu that serves as a breather before the darker alternate timeline.
Feature film set after the OVA. Kurisu takes center stage.
Technically non-canon to the visual novel lore, but beloved by fans. It reverses the dynamic, putting Kurisu in the position of trying to anchor Okabe's existence across worldlines.
Four short promotional comedic episodes with IBM. Fun, but skippable.
Short promotional vignettes about AI and lab members cooking fried chicken. Completely skippable.
The Beta Worldline (Steins;Gate 0)
Alternate version of Episode 23 where Okabe gives up. Bridges directly into Steins;Gate 0.
Essential bridge. In this branch, Okabe fails to save Kurisu and refuses to try again, triggering the Beta worldline events of Steins;Gate 0.
Follows the broken Okabe through the Beta worldline. Essential companion to the original.
Not a sequel, but the painful backstory behind the final video message that made Operation Skuld possible in the original timeline.
Valentine's Day comedy special for Steins;Gate 0. Pure bonus fun.
