Sailor Moon Watch Order: The 90s Anime, Movies, Crystal, Eternal and Cosmos, in order
“The 90s anime, Crystal, Eternal and Cosmos in release order, with every movie and special sorted.”
Ok, quick quiz. How many versions of Sailor Moon are there? Answer: two, and nobody warns you before you press play.
The 1990s anime (Sailor Moon, R, S, SuperS and Sailor Stars) came first and runs about 200 episodes. Then Sailor Moon Crystal showed up in 2014 and started over, sticking closer to Naoko Takeuchi's manga, and it kept going through Season III, the two Eternal films and Cosmos. Think of it like a band's original album and its remaster: same songs, different mix. (I know, nobody asked for two versions, but here we are.)
So where do you start? Answer: the 90s anime, in release order. That's the order this page follows, with Crystal coming after it as the retelling. Not up for 200 episodes? Start at Crystal and come back to the 90s run later. Both routes work, just finish one arc before you hop to the other version.
Now the extras. The three movies (R, S and SuperS) are standalone stories set during their seasons, so they're optional. Watch each one right after its season and you won't miss a thing. The short specials and home-video releases are mostly skippable, and the skip card lists them for you. Moon Pride and Moon Effect are short music videos from the Crystal era, also optional, for when you want a few minutes of pure nostalgia.
At the end: Sailor Moon through Sailor Stars, then Crystal, Crystal Season III, the two Eternal films and Cosmos. That's 21 steps and only 10 of them are required. Moon Prism Power, Make Up!
Sailor Moon and R (1992-1993)
Start here. Usagi trips into destiny and the Dark Kingdom arc kicks off. 46 episodes.
Direct sequel. Chibiusa drops in from the future and the Black Moon Clan arc begins. 43 episodes.
A 17-minute special from the R era. Cute extra, no plot you need.
Standalone film about Mamoru's old friend Fiore. Watch it right after R.
Sailor Moon S and SuperS (1994-1995)
Direct continuation. The Outer Senshi show up and the Death Busters arc begins. 38 episodes.
A 27-minute bonus OVA from the S era. Fun if you're hooked, not needed for the story.
Standalone film set around the S era. Watch it after S.
The Dream arc, with Pegasus, Elios and the Dead Moon Circus. 39 episodes.
Three short specials, about 16 minutes each. Fan extras.
Standalone film set during SuperS.
A 15-minute side story all about Ami. Sweet, short and easy to skip.
Sailor Stars and extras (1996-1998)
Final arc of the 90s anime, with Sailor Galaxia and the Starlights. 34 episodes.
Three bonus OVAs from 1996-97. Extras only.
Sailor Moon Crystal (2014-2016)
A fresh retelling from the start: the Dark Kingdom and Black Moon arcs. 26 episodes.
Think of Crystal as the remaster, not the sequel. It retells the whole story, closer to Naoko Takeuchi's manga than the 90s anime. Here's the map: Crystal Seasons 1-2 retell Sailor Moon and R, Season III retells S, the Eternal films retell SuperS, and Cosmos retells Stars. You don't need the 90s anime to follow it, and you don't need Crystal after finishing the 90s run unless you want the manga version.
Crystal's Death Busters arc. Picks up right where Crystal left off. 13 episodes.
Eternal and Cosmos (2021-2023)
The Dream arc, first of two films. Press play on Part 2 right after.
Eternal adapts the Dream arc as two films instead of a TV season. Both came out in 2021 and they tell one story, so don't take a break between them (the snacks can wait).
The final Stars arc and the end of the Crystal run.
Cosmos adapts the Stars arc and came out in two parts in June 2023. Lifehaki lists it as one entry, so watch Part 1 and Part 2 back to back.
