Fate/Grand Order Timeline: The Real Story vs. the Side Shorts, in order
“One real story (First Order to Solomon), one giant pile of side comedy, and a decade of ad reels you can ignore.”
Fate/Grand Order has one of the most misleading anime catalogs in the entire franchise. Search it up and you'll get twenty-plus entries, and most of them aren't story at all.
Here's the actual shape of it. The real narrative is four pieces: First Order (the 2016 special that sets up Chaldea, Ritsuka, and Mash), then Babylonia, then the two-part Camelot movie, then the Solomon finale. Watch those four in order and you've seen the entire Grand Order storyline start to finish. That's it. That's the whole plot most people are here for.
Everything else in the catalog falls into one of two buckets. The first is side comedy: "You've Lost Ritsuka Fujimaru" and its many follow-up batches are 2-minute chibi gag shorts about life at Chaldea, completely disconnected from the main story. There's also a Camelot-era OVA that's played entirely for laughs. None of it is required, but if you're attached to the cast after Babylonia, it's a fun detour.
The second bucket is promotional material. FGO has an ongoing library of ~1-minute CM shorts advertising the mobile game, running since 2014, plus a handful of New Year's specials built around the game's Lostroom concept. Some of these are animated by genuinely great studios and worth a watch for the visuals alone, but there's no plot to follow. There's also a clip-show recap tucked into the TV run that you can skip without losing anything.
I've grouped everything below by era so you can see where each piece fits, and tagged each one essential, optional, or skippable so you know exactly what you're signing up for before you hit play. If you only want the story, follow the essential tags and you'll cut a 20+ entry list down to four.
The Origin Special
The pilot special that started it all.
Aired as a New Year's Eve TV special in 2016 to launch the FGO anime line. It adapts the game's tutorial chapter and introduces Ritsuka, Mash, and the Chaldea setup every later entry assumes you already know.
New Year's Side Stories
A side story set outside the main singularities.
A non-canon 'behind the curtain' story built around the game's Lostroom archive concept. Skippable if you're only here for the main plot.
The route
A comedy short, not part of the story.
One of the chibi-comedy New Year specials Aniplex bundles with its countdown broadcast. Pure gag content, no bearing on the singularities.
A comedic explainer short based on the 4-koma spinoff manga.
Same New Year's tradition as the entry above, one year later. Skip it without missing anything.
Three 15-second ads for the manga's print volumes.
Literally commercials, included here only because they're catalogued as part of the franchise.
The Babylonia Singularity
A 27-minute preview released ahead of the TV series.
Functions as an unofficial episode zero: real animation and real character beats that lead straight into Babylonia. Worth watching first.
The route
The story most people mean when they say "watch the FGO anime."
Clip-show recap episodes covering the same season.
Broadcast as filler between story episodes. Skip unless you need a refresher.
The Camelot Singularity
The first of two Camelot films, continuing straight from Babylonia.
The route
A comedic side-story OVA starring the Babylonia and Camelot cast.
Non-canon and mostly played for laughs. Fun if you're attached to the characters, skippable if you're chasing plot.
The second Camelot film, concluding the singularity.
The Solomon Finale
The finale movie that closes out the main Grand Order story.
You've Lost Ritsuka Fujimaru (Side Comedy)
The first of an ongoing chibi-comedy spinoff series.
Entirely disconnected from the main story: 2-minute gag shorts about Ritsuka's daily life at Chaldea. Purely for fans of the cast.
The route
33 episodes of 2-minute comedy shorts.
A year-end comedy special, same format.
26 more 2-minute comedy shorts.
Two bonus shorts.
24 more 2-minute comedy shorts.
Two bonus shorts.
Currently airing — the newest batch of shorts.
Ongoing Promos & Teasers
A 1-minute teaser, most likely previewing what comes next.
Very recent (August 2026) and barely a minute long. Not enough here to call essential yet.
The route
An ongoing library of 1-minute promotional shorts for the mobile game, running since 2014.
Not a story at all: these are ad spots for game events, some animated by the same top-tier studios as the movies. Worth it for the animation, not the plot.
