Fate Watch Order: The Best Order for Zero, Stay Night, Heaven's Feel and More, in order
“Fate/Zero, Unlimited Blade Works, Heaven's Feel and the spin-offs in a clean watch order.”
Fate is a franchise where everyone tells you to start somewhere different. So let's make a decision: start with Fate/Zero.
Why? Answer: it's a prequel, it's self-contained, and it makes everything after it hit harder. Fate/Zero covers the Fourth Holy Grail War. The Fifth Holy Grail War, the main Fate/stay night story, happens about ten years later. Think of it as hearing a band's origin story before you play their first album.
After Zero comes Fate/stay night: Unlimited Blade Works, the 2014 version, which runs in two parts. Then the three Heaven's Feel films. Heaven's Feel is a different route of the same story, so events play out differently, and it makes more sense once you've seen Unlimited Blade Works.
There are older versions too. The 2006 Fate/stay night series and the 2010 Unlimited Blade Works film adapt the same material. They're marked optional or skippable because the newer versions are the ones this order points you to. The recap specials are skippable as well.
Everything else is a separate story: Fate/Apocrypha, Fate/Extra: Last Encore and Fate/strange Fake. They're optional and can be watched in any order. Fate/strange Fake: Whispers of Dawn is included below.
Fate/Grand Order has its own page on Lifehaki. Spin-offs like Prisma Illya and Lord El-Melloi II aren't part of this order.
At the end: Zero, Unlimited Blade Works, Heaven's Feel, then wander the side stories at your own pace. Holy Grail Wars are messy. This list doesn't have to be.
The Fourth Holy Grail War
Start here. Prequel to the Holy Grail War, setting up the entire timeline.
Fate/Zero covers the Fourth Holy Grail War ten years before the Fifth. Starting here establishes the magic system, the Church, and the backstory of Kiritsugu and Kirei.
Second half and conclusion of the Fourth Holy Grail War.
Direct continuation of Season 1. Leads straight into the tragic events that set up Fate/stay night.
The Fifth Holy Grail War
Episode 0 showing the start of the war from Rin Tohsaka's perspective.
Short prologue to the 2014 adaptation. Not strictly required, but provides great context for Rin.
The recommended adaptation of the Fifth Holy Grail War.
The 2014 ufotable adaptation of the Unlimited Blade Works route. The best place to start the main Fate/stay night story.
Second half and climax of Unlimited Blade Works.
Short alternate epilogue special. Lighthearted and optional.
Alternate route of the same war. Darker tone centered on Sakura Matou.
Heaven's Feel is a different route through the same story, changing events and relationships dramatically. Watch Unlimited Blade Works first.
Second film of the Heaven's Feel movie trilogy.
Climax and final film of the Heaven's Feel trilogy.
Side stories & alternate wars
Special OVA prologue setting up the False Holy Grail War in the US.
Written by Ryohgo Narita (Baccano!, Durarara!!). Standalone and can be enjoyed anytime after Zero/UBW.
Older adaptations
Studio DEEN's original TV series adapting the Saber route.
Watch it for completeness or nostalgia. The ufotable adaptations feature superior animation and consistency.
