Black Butler Watch Order: Seasons 1-2, Book of Circus, Atlantic and the New Arcs, in order
“Every Black Butler season, OVA, film and special in release order, with the anime-original seasons explained.”
Sebastian can bake a cake, fend off assassins and fold the laundry before dawn. The Black Butler watch order is a little trickier, because the story has been adapted more than once. (Eleven titles. Don't panic.)
Here's the short version. Seasons 1 and 2 aired while the manga was still unfinished, so they drift into anime-original storylines. Everything from Book of Circus onward goes back to the manga. So do you need Season 2? Answer: no. It's an anime-original story, so it's optional. Season 1 is the starting point, and Book of Circus returns to the manga storyline. From there the order is simple: Book of Murder, the Book of the Atlantic film, the Public School Arc and the Emerald Witch Arc.
The recap, the 2009 special, the picture drama and the six Black Butler II comedy specials are all skippable. Think of them as leftover cake: sweet, but you'll survive without it.
At the end: Season 1, Season 2 if you like, then Book of Circus through the Emerald Witch Arc. A very good butler would watch them in order.
The anime-original era (2008-2011)
Start here. Young Earl Ciel Phantomhive and his demon butler Sebastian take on cases in Victorian England. 24 episodes, 2008 to 2009.
An anime-original sequel to Season 1. 12 episodes, 2010.
The first two seasons aired while the manga was still unfinished, so they follow anime-original storylines. Season 2 is optional if you want to stay with the manga story.
Six parody specials, Ciel in Wonderland, from 2010 and 2011.
Back to the manga (2014-2025)
The storyline returns to the manga. 10 episodes, 2014.
From here on the anime follows the manga, so everything after Book of Circus runs in the same storyline. This is the natural next step after Season 1.
A 1 hour 40 minute film from January 2017 adapting the Campania arc, set on a luxury liner.
Ciel heads to a boarding school. 11 episodes from CloverWorks, spring 2024.
The latest arc. 13 episodes from CloverWorks, spring 2025.
