Story

Synopsis

In an alternate modern Tokyo, an unseen metaphysical boundary separates human society from the shadowy Netherworld. When a crucial peace treaty guaranteeing non-aggression expires after centuries of coexistence, fanatical demon radicals attempt to assassinate the key diplomat, human mystic Giuseppe Mayart. Covert Black Guard operative Renzaburo Taki is assigned to escort the eccentric dignitary, partnered with seductive demon agent Makie. Navigating lethal shape-shifting assassins, grotesque biological horrors, and seductive deceptions, Taki and Makie forge an intimate bond while executing devastating firepower to prevent full-scale interdimensional warfare.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Directed by Yoshiaki Kawajiri and animated by Madhouse, this 1987 supernatural neo-noir thriller adapts the dark fantasy novel by Hideyuki Kikuchi. Renowned for its hyper-stylized violent aesthetic, atmospheric jazz fusion score, and boundary-pushing erotic horror, the film established Kawajiri international reputation as a master of adult action animation. Its innovative blend of body horror, cyberpunk lighting, and fluid hand-drawn combat exerted a profound influence on Western filmmakers, including the Wachowskis during the visual conceptualization of *The Matrix*.
