Story

Synopsis

In 2067 the United Nations bans robotics research and manufacture. Japan, home of the industry leader Daiwa Heavy Industries, fights the ban, loses, and walks out of the world into high-tech isolation. Ten years later, a special forces unit called SWORD sends agents into the sealed country to learn what is happening behind the barrier. One of them is Vexille, a veteran who finds out what the silence has been hiding.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Vexille (Bekushiru: 2077 Nihon Sakoku, a subtitle that translates to "2077 Japan Isolation") is a CGI film written, directed and edited by Fumihiko Sori, who had earlier produced Appleseed. Haruka Handa co-wrote it, Oxybot produced the animation, and Paul Oakenfold composed the score. Meisa Kuroki made her acting debut as the voice of Vexille. The film had its world premiere at the Locarno Film Festival in August 2007 and opened in Japan the same month. Funimation handled its US release, and the film was sold to 75 countries after Locarno, a number that later grew to 129.
