Based on Tomihiko Morimi's sci-fi novel and animated by Studio Colorido, the story follows fourth-grader Aoyama, a precocious, intellectual boy who records rigorous scientific observations in his notebook and harbors a crush on a mysterious dental assistant known as the Lady. One sweltering summer morning, an army of wild Adélie penguins inexplicably materializes in their quiet inland suburban town, far from the ocean. Teaming up with the Lady, Aoyama conducts the Penguin Highway scientific expedition, discovering that the Lady can spontaneously create penguins by throwing mundane objects like soda cans into the air.
⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Aoyama and his classmate Hamamoto discover a floating, water-like sphere in the forest called the Ocean, which is slowly expanding and destabilizing the local environment. When a monster known as the Jabberwock emerges, the Lady's health deteriorates. Aoyama realizes the Lady is not human, but an interdimensional catalyst inextricably linked to the Ocean. To save the town from collapse, the Lady and her penguin flock enter the sphere, successfully collapsing the anomaly. The Lady bids a tender farewell to Aoyama, disappearing into the sky as Aoyama vows to grow up and find her again.
Aoyama's just too young and inexperienced- chronologically AND scientifically- to achieve the things he really desires, and he seemed to me in danger of abandoning an easily attainable goal in favor of an elusive dream, but this IS anime, so I guess ANYTHING'S possible.
