Three strong stars to a viscerally visual anime of endless energy; complete with a likeable lead, fun secondary characters, and an interesting spin on western religion. There is nothing quite like Hells. That is until the third section of the film where it loses a lot of its steam with a contrived moral message, and wearing out of its welcome.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Hells is a Madhouse film directed by Yoshiki Yamakawa from Shinichi Hiromoto's manga Hells Angels, a title that still shows up on some releases. Kazuyuki Fudeyasu and Yamakawa wrote the screenplay. It premiered at the Tokyo International Film Festival in October 2008, then had a small theatrical run in 2009. Madhouse first showed the project in 2005, but a wide release was slow to arrive: an English-subtitled Blu-ray appeared in 2012, and Discotek Media put out a Blu-ray with a new English dub in North America in 2018. It runs about two hours.
