Synopsis

Beneath its bustling surface and famous culinary culture, the coastal city of Fukuoka harbors a dangerous secret: an estimated three percent of its population are professional contract killers. Private detective and baseball enthusiast Zenji Banba investigates underworld murders while operating out of a modest office. His path collides with Lin Xianming, a cross-dressing Chinese mercenary seeking to avenge his sister and escape his criminal syndicate. Forming an unlikely partnership alongside hackers, torture specialists, and fellow assassins, Banba and Lin navigate brutal gang wars and political corruption while bonding over local ramen.

Background (may contain spoilers)

Broadcasting twelve episodes from January to March 2018, *Hakata Tonkotsu Ramens* was produced by studio Satelight and directed by Kenji Yasuda. Based on the award-winning noir light novel series written by Chiaki Kisaki and illustrated by Hako Ichiiro, the anime stood out for its slick ensemble dynamic, gritty metropolitan underworld setting, and dark comedic charm. Anchored by a driving jazz-rock soundtrack composed by Kotaro Nakagawa, the production provided viewers with an engaging, fast-paced crime caper.
