Story

Synopsis

Centuries after ecological catastrophe rendered Earth uninhabitable, the surviving remnants of humanity reside inside Eden, a sterile, highly regulated technological metropolis on the Moon. Teenager Takeru spends his days tuning lunar hover-crafts with his rebellious friends and racing through domed transport tunnels. During an expedition outside the city dome, Takeru recovers a damaged surveillance capsule containing physical photographs of a young woman and green landscapes on Earth. Convinced that human life survived the apocalypse despite the Administration official denials, Takeru risks banishment to uncover the truth.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Released across seven direct-to-video episodes between 2006 and 2008, *Freedom* was produced by Sunrise and directed by Shuhei Morita. Created in high-profile collaboration with Nissin Cup Noodles for their corporate anniversary, the production featured original character and mechanical designs created by legendary manga artist Katsuhiro Otomo. Blending early cel-shaded 3D computer graphics with traditional anime cinematography and a sweeping score by Yoshihiro Ike, the project received praise for its cinematic energy and optimistic spirit.
