Story

Synopsis

Afflicted by a rare physiological defect that caps his mortal lifespan at twenty years, fourteen-year-old orphan Chen Changsheng refuses to surrender to grim destiny. Leaving his remote mountain master armed with an aristocratic marriage contract, Changsheng travels to the imperial capital of the Zhou Dynasty to find a miraculous cure. Despite facing cruel rejection, political snobbery, and assassination attempts from elite noble clans, Changsheng enters the impoverished Orthodox Academy. Relying on photographic mastery of three thousand sacred Taoist scriptures, the frail prodigy cultivates unprecedented spiritual power to rewrite his destiny against Heaven.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Adapted from Mao Ni's landmark xianxia novel, *Ze Tian Ji* was animated by Foch Film and debuted on Tencent Video in summer 2015. Spanning thirteen episodes in its first season, the 2D animated fantasy garnered high acclaim for its philosophical depth, intricate geopolitical worldbuilding, and Changsheng's calm, intellectual approach to overcoming adversity. The production was a major pioneer for China's burgeoning donghua industry, earning positive reception for its atmospheric background art, elegant musical score, and faithful adaptation.
