Story
Synopsis
In 2026, the revolutionary augmented reality device known as the Augma surpasses full-dive virtual reality in popularity, allowing users to play Ordinal Scale, an AR action game that rewards players with real-world consumer discounts. While Asuna, Klein, and Lisbeth embrace the game, Kirito remains skeptical of physical fitness constraints in AR. However, when original Sword Art Online boss monsters begin appearing at AR battle arenas across Tokyo, SAO survivors are systematically targeted by rank two player Eiji, who uses physical brute force to trigger traumatic memories and strip survivors of their Aincrad recollections.

Kirito discovers that Ordinal Scale developer Professor Shigemura and Eiji are scanning survivors' Aincrad memories to harvest data to reconstruct an artificial intelligence clone of Shigemura's deceased daughter Yuna. When the concert arena is hijacked to extract memories from thousands of players, Kirito trains his real-world agility, defeats Eiji in an AR duel, and enters full-dive to slay the Floor One Hundred boss of Aincrad. Restoring Asuna's stolen memories, Kirito receives the legendary blade from Yuna's ghost, preserving her memory before proposing to Asuna under meteor fireworks.
