Synopsis

This film retells the Macross Frontier story with substantial changes, following Alto Saotome caught between Sheryl Nome, an established galactic superstar, and Ranka Lee, a newcomer whose singing carries an unexpected connection to the Vajra threatening the fleet. Combat, concerts, and romance are treated as equally central, and the film's climax stages a battle in which the music is the weapon. The alterations from the television series produce a different resolution to the triangle and a substantially reworked ending. Every performance doubles as a tactical operation with real casualties attached.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Produced by Satelight and directed by Shoji Kawamori, The Wings of Farewell is the second of two Macross Frontier films and diverges considerably from the television series it retells. The Macross franchise has combined transforming aircraft, idol music, and love triangles since 1982, and its songs have consistently charted in Japan as genuine commercial releases. Yoko Kanno's work across the Frontier soundtrack is widely regarded as among her strongest, and the film's concert-battle sequences are franchise highlights. Its concert sequences remain among the most technically ambitious the franchise produced.
